Our new event space.

New for 2012 we will be at a new venue - Basic Ballroom, 335 West 35th (just in from 8th Avenue).   Check out the Studio by clicking here.
Here is a quick primer to help get you comfortable with the new surroundings:

1.      Parking – Many of you asked about the parking rules for 35th Street. Here is a helpful link that provides parking info for streets all over Manhattan http://a841-dotvweb01.nyc.gov/ParkingRegs/ViewController/LocationValidation.aspx
Parking on 35th Street is free all day and all night on weekends, other than a single ambulance space which is restricted before 7pm on Saturdays.  There is also an Edison parking lot right around the corner on 9th Ave. However, beware, no parking is permitted in the diagonal spaces on 35th Street, those are for police only!  Which brings us to the second concern….

2.      Security – Although Basic Ballroom is only a few blocks away from Club 412, some members expressed concern about the safety of the location.  The good news is that the Midtown South NYPD Precinct is located just a few doors down from Basic Ballroom right on 35th street!  Police stations make excellent neighbors…

3.      Access – Some folks asked about public transportation.  We are still so close to Club 412 that nothing much should change for people – Penn Station is still the right stop for the subway (A/C/E lines) and commuter train.  When you come out of Penn Station, just walk two blocks up 8th Ave instead of down and hang a left on 35th.

4.      BYOB – People were largely positive about the ability to bring in their own drinks, but wondered where they could buy supplies.  There are several options!  Penn Wine & Spirits is a nice store that is open until 9pm and located underground on the LIRR level of Penn Station.  For those running later than 9pm, NRS Wine & Liquor is at 414 8th Ave (right by Club 412) and Harry’s Liquors is at 270 W 36th.  Neither of those stores qualify as “fancy”, but they are close.  For beer/wine, mixers and non-alcoholic drinks, Duane Reade is right at the corner of 8th and 34th and is open 24 hours.

5.      Air Conditioning – For the first 90 minutes of our January 8th dance we didn’t realize that the heat was turned on!  So, we got several comments about the room being too hot.  We know that lack of adequate air conditioning has been a constant problem at Club 412.  So, we will make sure that the heat is turned off for April and we have explained to the landlord that we need appropriate levels of A/C to keep us comfortable.
Here is a link to a map of the area surrounding Basic Ballroom that shows the places described above.  We hope that this information will encourage everyone to come out and try the new space and enjoy a great series for 2011.
