Swango Outing Thu, 08 Oct 2015 14:28:53 +0000 Continue reading ]]> Here’s a special opportunity for an outing to see some of your favorite West Coast Swing stars on the big stage.  Gotham Swing Club is being offered a 25% discount to see the off-broadway revival of Swango!  The cast includes Robert and Nicola Royston, Tashina Beckmann, Cameo Cross, Parker Dearborn, Ben McHenry, Melissa Rutz and PJ Turner (and some champion tango dancers as well).

To get your tickets and 25% discount, click here: and at the appropriate prompt enter the discount code GOTHAM

In case you are not familiar with this awesome production, here is a synopisis and clip.

A new revival of the 2005 off-Broadway hit by Tony Award®-winning playwright, Rupert Holmes, based on a concept by Mariela Franganillo (of Recuerdo Tango performed at Schimmel in 2013) and Robert Royston. Following in the tradition of West Side Story, this contemporary, Romeo and Juliet story depicts a unique fusion of dance, romance, revelry and rivalry within and between two different worlds. In one evening we see the tale of two lovers; the girl from the sultry world of Argentine Tango, the boy from the lively arena of West Coast Swing. When the lovers conquer their differences, they create the harmonic fusion of Swing and Tango.

Forever Tango star Mariela Franganillo and four-time International Swing Dance Champion, Robert Royston (Swing! ), both choreographic “masters of tango and swing, respectively,” (NEWSDAY) have united to create a new thrilling and enticing dance form uniting Argentine Tango and West Coast Swing. Throw in Tony Award®-winning writer, Rupert Holmes (The Mystery of Edwin Drood) and the result is an electrifying and mesmerizing blend of drama, comedy and music that swings and seduces the heart, and dance that stirs and stimulates the soul.

Margaret Batiuchok – Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient 2015 Fri, 04 Sep 2015 13:24:23 +0000 Continue reading ]]> There was a time that swing dancing was at danger of being lost forever. In the late 70’s, the newest partner dance, the Hustle, took over the scene. Well before there was any interest in swing, New York’s own Margaret Batiuchok was winning dance contests and organizing a club.

In 1983, Margaret won the Harvest Moon Ball at Madison Square Garden with a legendary local lindy hopper named George Lloyd – just 6 months after meeting him. In 1985, Margaret organized the New York Swing Dance Society. The NYSDS created a strong, vibrant scene and amassed scores of addicted swing dancers. NYSDS ruled the world. Also, notable is Margaret received her Masters degree from NYU, writing her thesis, all 104 pages of it, on the Lindy Hop.

Margaret was also the first to bring other types of swing to the New York scene. She was the first to attend the US Open in Anaheim and bring West Coast Swing back home. In the mid-80’s, Margaret attended the SOS Shag weeks in N. Myrtle Beach, SC, again bringing home another swing dance.

No one is more deserving than Margaret for the Gotham Lifetime Achievement Award, as truly, no one has done more. So many people’s lives are made better because of dance. It is the open hearts of leaders like Margaret who help bring forth such a glorious gift.

Marion Grant – Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient 2015 Tue, 11 Aug 2015 19:08:31 +0000 Continue reading ]]> In the prehistoric pre-digital age, every region in the nation has its own identity when it came to West Coast Swing. New York had a very specific style of dance and a sound all its own. Words like cool, sophisticated, erudite came to mind to describe our scene.

New York City is nothing if not a rich pool of talent. When the Gotham Swing Club formed, from the get-go that talent was tapped. And in a conscious, deliberate effort, the club very purposefully represented the scene in all regards.

Not unimportant were all the visuals attached to the club. From the club clothes and accessories, to the web site, to the newsletter, to the party invitations. All created by talented, experienced professionals who donated their time and artistry to the club.

One such artist is Marion Grant. Marion has devoted her life to art, both as a fine artist and a graphic artist. Marion tirelessly helped the club time after time in creating the most interesting pieces in many facets of club marketing.

Below are just a few of the many pieces created by Marion.

On August 1st, Marion was awarded the Lifetime Achievement award from the club. It is with our deepest gratitude and appreciation for her help in creating a tangible identity the club. The success of the club is a reflection of the love and dedication by those who lift it. As much as anyone, that was Marion. We are all in her debt. We thank you.
